The leaders of the two biggest powers of the European Union welcomed Assad's departure, which had caused the terrible <x0 disaster to the Syrian people and major damage to his country”, transmits Telegrafi.
The Syrian leader left Damascus for Moscow on Sunday, ending more than 50 years of brutal rule by his family.
“Scholz and Macron agreed that they are prepared to work together with the new rulers on the basis of basic human rights and protection of ethnic and religious minorities”, the German government's statement published late Monday said.
The statement came as governments around the world are trying to establish new ties with Syria's main rebel faction, Hayat Tarhir al-Sham (HTS), a group formerly ally with Al Qaeda and has been named a terrorist organisation by the US, the European Union, Turkey and the United Nations.
“Scholz and Macron agreed to work together to strengthen the EU's commitment to Syria, including support for a comprehensive political process in Syria, and to discuss the way forward in close co-ordination with partners in the Middle East”, the statement said.
