Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed regret at the tragic crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines airline plane that crashed after entering Russian airspace over Grozny, Chechny. The event occurred Wednesday and ended with 38 casualties, but Putin has declined Russia's responsibility for the incident.
According to a Kremlin statement, the plane was trying to land at Grozni Airport when Russian air defence systems were active because of reported attacks by Ukraine. After some unsuccessful attempt at landing, the plane slipped eastward and crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan.
Of the 38 people on board, most were citizens of Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Two children were among the survivors.
Meanwhile, American sources have suggested that a Russian anti-aircraft system may have crashed the plane, but this has not been confirmed. In his comments, Putin avoided any direct statements on Russian air defence involvement.
In a telephone conversation with Azerbaijann President Ilham Aliyev, Putin apologised for the incident and described it as a tragic event, while stressing that attacks by Ukrainian combat fears had created a tense situation in the area. Investigations into the whiteening of circumstances continue. /euronews. al
