The Kosovo Foreign Ministry has said it has closely followed the judicial process against Nezir Mehmetaj, who was sentenced Friday by Serbia to war crimes claim during 1999.
In a response, the MPJD said that for the six-year sentence ruling, the QUINT states in Serbia and Kosovo have been notified.
“The Foreign Ministry and Diaspora has regularly alarmed and announced the institutions of the European Union, Quint states and international human rights protection organisations, raising continuing concerns about Serbian arbitrary and destructive actions that clash with international human rights conventions”.
The MPJD, meanwhile, said its representatives have regularly visited Mehmetaj in prison, and that they have participated in court hearings against him, looking closely at Serbia's groundless claims towards Kosovo citizens.
“The MPJD calls on Serbia to halt its arbitrary actions against Kosovo citizens, and, at the same time, calls on the international community to take immediate action against these continuing actions of Serbia”, says the response to Klan Kosova.
Serbia's Supreme Court said it has concluded that Mehmetaj in June 1999 had participated in the kidnapping of Roma national civilian Jelaj Ramadan, whose mortar remains have not yet been found.
According to court claims, along with Mehmetaj were other members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK).
The court's decision also told them that Mehmetaj was a member The KLA and at that time moved to the village of Rudica in uniform of the KLA.
He was arrested on 3 January 2020 at the Merdara border crossing and has since been held in custody.
That same year, Serbian judicial authorities brought charges against him under war crimes charges.
The sentence will account for the time remaining in custody, and this decision on the first instance of the Serbian judiciary will be appealed.
