Montenegro extradites to the US “The king of cryptovalutes”

“Today, at the border point of Podgorica Airport, NCB officials Interpol Podgorica, with the support of the Special Police Unit, extradited South Korean national DHK, which was wanted by two states -- South Korea and the United States of America” respectively -- is said in the statement.

Do Kwon was also wanted by South Korea, but Montenegrin Justice Minister Bojan Bozovic decided on December 27th to extradite him to the US.

Courts in Montenegro have issued at least eight verdicts -- often contradictory -- regarding the fate of Do Kwon.

In September, the Supreme Court of Montenegro said that Do Kwon could be sent to either the United States or South Korea, and that the final decision on which country the justice minister belonged to.

On December 24th, Do Kwon lost the final complaint to Montenegro's Constitutional Court against extradition.

Montenegro's Justice Ministry said it decided to extradite Do Kwin to the US, taking into account all the facts and assessing the conditions, such as the burden of criminal acts, the place of their conduct, the order of submitting the application, citizenship and fugitive, the possibility of further extradition to another country.

Do Kwon and his business partner, Chang Jun, were arrested in Montenegro on March 23rd, 2023, when they tried to travel to Dubai on a private flight using counterfeit passports.

Kwon was later sentenced to four months in prison for counterfeiting travel documents. Chang Yun was extradited to South Korea earlier this year. /euronews
