The prime minister believes poverty is the main reason for illiteracy in Kosovo.
Albin Kurti was asked at a media conference on the scale of illiteracy in Kosovo, which according to the latest census has not changed much.
He said he still hasn't named “ ” this result, but showed the general impression he said exists about this, which he said relates to the quality difference of learning in rural areas compared to urban areas.
And what is our general impression is that illiteracy is more expressed precisely in the poorest population and rural areas, because there is a marked difference in the quality of learning in some rural areas, compared to urban areas. So, according to studies that have been done, even earlier, and that are confirmed to this day, the difference between the village and the city is not as material as in the sense of teaching preparation”, Kurti said.
And now as a result of that, where the population is both poor and remote rural areas, there's more illiteracy”, he added.
One way to combat illiteracy, Kurti said that “is to get people out of poverty”.
Because some families now two and three generations, if not more, are poor, then even the poor child who has it may be easy with poor learning, where maybe even the school is not among the best in Kosovo, because the most qualitative teachers have moved more towards cities since Kosovo's liberation and from here. So, the main way to fight illiteracy, for our belief, is to fight poverty, and then we definitely need to have a decentralisation as far as the future is concerned, so that not everything can concentrate on the seven cities of Kosovo”, he said.
