The ambassador of the United States to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, has reacted to last week's situation in the Kosovo Assembly, where deptants of the Vetevendosje Movement tried to prevent Serb List deputies from being signed so that they can get the MP's salary and not lose the mandate.
During an interview on ATV's “Context” show, Havenier expressed his concern about developments and stressed that the situation was “to regret”, since he did not serve any party.
He stressed that a parliamentary session should be an opportunity for elected representatives to realise their functions “to advance the interests of their people. ”
Let me talk very briefly about the situation in the Assembly last week. I think that was pathetic. In the end, no one looked good. Sadly, a House session is suspended for what appears to be an attempt not to allow selected representatives to perform their functions. On the other hand, it is also very sad that elected representatives who are there to promote interests and advance the interests of their people choose not to exercise rights. This is not also the promise of democracy that we would hope to see, certainly in Ahtisaari's time when we were negotiating the provisions for countries designated for minority representatives in parliament. We hoped, we expected them to use the capacity of their role as MPs to address their community concerns and advance them. So this whole thing was pathetic.
