German government reacts after Elon Musk voiced support for AfD

The German government tried not to give too much weight to the positions expressed by billionaire Elon Musk for the general election in Germany, as he again spoke of the far-right party Alternative to Germany (AfD). Musk caused debate over the weekend after supporting the AfD party in an opinion published in a large German newspaper that prompted the resignation in protest of the editor responsible for the opinion column.
“Freedom of expression also included more meaningless positions”, declared the government's spokeswoman, Christiane Hoffmann, adding that she would not comment more on Musk's statements.
She said, however. Elon Musk is actually trying to influence federal elections through his” statements..
In this context, spokeswoman Hoffman also stressed that the AfD party is being monitored by the German interior intelligence service under suspicion that it is an extremist right-wing party and that it already has such status in some parts of Germany.
Germany will hold early elections on 23 February, after Chancellor Olaf Schelz's ruling coalition -- consisting of three parties -- collapsed last month following disagreements on how to recover the country's slow-down economy.
Mr. Musk's opinion in the newspaper '%Welt am Sontagı, published in German at the weekend, is the second example within the month of his support of the AfD party.
“ ( AfD is the last spark of hope for this country”expresss Musk in his German translation.
He also said the far-right party “can lead the country towards the future where economic progress, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wish, but reality”.
According to polls, the AfD party has strong support, but its candidate Alice Weidel is unlikely to become Chancellor because other parties refuse to co-operate with the right-wing party.
The ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, billionaire Musk, in his writing, challenged attitudes towards the party.
“Portretisation of the AfD as the extremist right-wing party is clearly false, given that party leader Alice Weidel has a partner of the same gender from Sri Lanka! Does it sound like Hitler? Please!”
