Wray made that known during an FBI internal meeting Wednesday.
President-elect Trump has demonstrated the desire to replace Wrayn with Cash Patel.
Wray, who was nominated by Trump in 2017 to serve a 10-year term, has faced criticism from the Republicans in recent years, due to investigations the FBI conducted against Trump after he left the White House.
Resigning instead of waiting for the dismissal, Wray is trying to avoid any clashes with the new Trump administration, which, according to him, would have included the FBI “even deeper in the conflict”.
My goal is to keep my focus on our mission which is the necessary job you do every day on behalf of the American people”, Wray told FBI employees.
“I think this is the best way to avoid getting the Bureau deeper into conflict, strengthening values and principles that are so important to the way we do our work”, he added.
Trump had made clear his anger with Wrayn in some cases.
In a fresh interview for the NBC's “programme, Trump said “I can't say I'm pleased with him. He invaded my” house, referring to the FBI raid on his property in Florida, Mar-a-Lago, two years ago on the case of documents classified by his first term as president.
But Wray rarely seemed to try to face the White House publicly. / REL
