The US Constitution decrees that a president has “broad power to extend deadlines and pardon for violations against the United States, except for the case of impeachment”.
Earlier this month, Biden issued a controversial pardon for his son Hunter, who continued a recent trend of presidents pardoning loved ones.
Announcing the move, Beden said that the pardons “have shown successful rehabilitation and have shown commitment to making their communities stronger and safer”.
Their nonviolent sentences included drug offences. The soft sentences were for hundreds of people who were housed in solitary confinement during the Codwood-19 pandemic, and who were facing sentences that Biden considered to be very long.
They have shown they deserve a second chance”, Biden said.
Giving further details of the move, the White House said that those receiving relief included a decorated military veteran and pilot who helped other church members, a nurse who helped spread the Ovidian vaccine and an addiction adviser.
Beden promised <x0 more steps in the following weeks”.
The president will leave the White House on January 20th 2025, when his successor Donald Trump will be inaugurated.
He previously had a record of forgiving fewer people than most presidents in modern US history.
Trump gave 237 acts of forgiveness during his first term at the White House, according to the Pew Research Centre. These included 143 pardons and 94 soft sentences.
