President Voldymyr Zelenskiy said that Ukriana must do everything possible to ensure that the war with Russia ends next year through diplomacy, a comment made at a crucial moment after winning the US presidential election of Donald Trump, and as Russia makes progress in the field of battle.
The Ukrainian president, however, indicated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is not interested in reaching a peace agreement.
“As far as it is up to us, we must do everything for this war to end next year, end by diplomatic means”, Mr. Zelenskiy said in an interview on Ukrainian radio broadcast Saturday.
Moscow's Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva said on Thursday that Russia would be open to negotiations for ending the war if they were to be launched by President-elect Donald Trump, though according to him in the talks “territorial realities” would have to be admitted.
Moscow uses this phrase to imply that Ukraine will have to give up the four regions Russian forces occupied in part and that Russia claims full control of.
President Zelenskiy has repeatedly indicated since Russia launched large-scale aggression in February 2022 that there can be no peace until all Russian forces are expelled and all territory occupied by Moscow, including Crimea, is retaked.
However, the return to the internationally recognised border of Ukraine was not mentioned in “President Zelenskiy's” victory plan, which he publicly introduced last month.
President Zelenskiy said the war was likely to end more quickly under the Trump administration, which indicated during his campaign that it would end the conflict quickly without detail.
President Zelenskiy said American law prevented him from meeting with Mr. Trump before his inauguration on January 20th.
We'll do everything that depends on us (to make an appointment). We had a really good meeting in September”, President Zelenskiy said, adding that he would speak only to Mr. Trump himself and not to any envoy or adviser. / VOA
