Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, approved an up-to-date nuclear doctrine Tuesday that stresses that Russia could examine the use of nuclear weapons if attacked by conventional missiles with the support of a nuclear power.
The decision to change Russia's official doctrine is the Kremlin's response to the reported US President Joe Biden's administration's decision to allow Ukraine to launch deep-range American missiles within Russia.
The updated doctrine, which reveals threats that may push Russia's leadership to think of the nuclear attack, argues that an attack by combat aircraft, fears or conventional missiles could be seen as such a threat.
According to this doctrine, any aggression against Russia by a state which is a member of a coalition will be considered by Moscow by the entire coalition.
A few weeks before the November US elections, Putin ordered the change of nuclear doctrine to stress that any conventional attack on Russia assisted by a nuclear power could be considered a joint attack against Russia.
The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has sparked the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West from Cuba's missile crisis in 1962. /Radio Europe Free
