President-elect Donald Trump has named a series of names this week that will lead agencies dealing with national security issues, from Defence Secretary to Ambassador to Israel. But the selection range has raised questions among experts.
They say some of the names such as Senator Marco Rubio, who is expected to retain the position of Secretary of State in the new administration are experienced experts, while others, according to them, seem to lack expertise, or the support it would take to carry out the task.
Analysts assess Senator Marko Rubio's appointment by President-elect Donald Trump for the post of State Secretary. They say Mr. Rubio knows foreign policy well and wants to reflect the agenda of the new administration.
I think Senator Rubio is largely reflecting Republican views of the importance of the role of United States in the world. A somewhat two-party feeling among the many members of Congress on the importance of supporting partners and allies. He is a strong supporter of Israel and very tough on facing Iran. I think it will reflect the agenda of this administration and follow that message very well. But what he's going to be involved in interilateral decision making is another issue because I don't see much closer between him and President Trump”, says Jonathan Lord of the Middle East Security Program, at the Centre for a New Security Access to America.
But the appointment by President-elect Trump, Pete Hegseth, TV network reporter The veteran Fox News of the war, in the position of Secretary of Defense, is viewed with confusion by experts.
They say he has little experience in management while at the helm of agencies that have 1.3 million active service members and about 1 million civilians working for the military.
Hegseth's appointment of the Secretary of Defense's “He has excellent military qualifications, as far as schooling is concerned, but has no high-level experience on national security issues and has never led a large organisation. President Trump likely views him as a statue-Quuo destroyer in an organisation he considers irresponsible”, says retired U.S. Navy colonel and senior adviser to the Center for International and Strategic Studies.
Mr. Trump has provided little detail on his foreign policy, but supporters say that the force of his personality and approach “peace through force” will cause foreign leaders to bow down before his will and calm down what the Republicans call a “world in fire”.
Mr. Trump's first administration was often marked on the world stage by its commercial protectionist policy, pre-” America, as well as insulating rhetoric, including threats to withdraw from NATO.
The way Mr. Trump will respond to Russia's war in Ukraine could set the tone of his agenda and signal his approach to NATO and key US allies, as Mr. Biden worked to rebuild key relations that collapsed under his predecessor's leadership.
Mr. Trump has been critical of Mr. Beden's support for Ukraine and has said that under his presidency, Washington will reconsider NATO's role. Last year, he told the agency Reuters that Ukraine may have to issue territory to reach a peace agreement, something Ukrainians oppose and that outgoing President Biden has never suggested.
Responding to the question of the reasons behind any name selected by Mr. Trump, expert John Simon says.
And so basically loyalty, confronting China, these are things I think have affected the choices that have been made. If you talk about someone like Marco Rubio or Mike Waltz, these are people who have been in Congress for a long time in positions related to foreign policy, there are people that world leaders know”, says John Simon former Ambassador to the African Union, an intergovernmental organisation founded to promote unity and solidarity among African states.
Experts also expressed concern over former Democrat lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard's election to the post of director of National Intelligence.
Mrs. Gabbard is known for continuing opposition to American intervention in Syria and has met secretly with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in January 2017, who has been charged with major human rights abuses. The meeting sparked criticism from both sides in Congress.
Tulsi Gabbard's name sheds a very negative light on everything else. How can you appoint someone who has proved irresponsible from a national security standpoint who will sit at the National Security Council meeting and think that the result will be positive? This is extremely disturbing”, says Mr. Simon.
Mr. Trump, who appointed former Governor of the Arkans, Mike Hookebe as ambassador to Israel, will also face an unstable situation in the Middle East, threatening to turn into a wider regional conflict. Israel is fighting in Gaza and Lebanon as it faces its eternal enemy, Iran. Mr. Trump has expressed support for Israel to destroy Hamas in Gaza, but has said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an ally of Israel, must finish the job quickly.
Mr. Trump is expected to continue supporting Israel with weapons, whose existence, as he has said, would be endangered if Mrs. Harris were elected president, a claim the Biden administration has rejected, stressing its strong support for Israel. / VOA
