Germany arrests an American on spying charges

An American, former employee of American forces stationed in Germany, has been arrested under suspicion of offering to provide information to them in China, German prosecutors said on November 7th.
According to prosecutors, the person arrested, identified only as Martin D., is being kept in doubt of expressing the will to undertake intelligence activities for a foreign intelligence service”. Prosecutors added he had “contacted Chinese officials in 2024 and had offered to provide sensitive information about the American Army”.
German prosecutors said he was arrested in Frankfurt on Thursday, and his residence was searched.
According to them, he had worked for American forces “by recently” and offered to give China “informations he had due to his work for American forces”.
The investigation has been conducted “in close co-ordination” with German intelligence, prosecutors said.
Last month, Germany said it had strengthened control for staff in sensitive areas of Government and Business, following increased spy fears, REL reports
In Germany there have been increasing cases of suspected spying on Russia since the war in Ukraine began but also cases of spying on China.
The case of China's highest profile of suspected spying includes an assistant member of the far-right European Parliament. He was arrested in April under suspicion of spying on Beijing.
