Rutte has said Trump leadership will be key to keeping it NATO strong.
I just wished Donald Trump for his election as president of the United States of America. His leadership will once again be key to keeping our alliance strong. I look forward to working with him and advancing peace through NATO”, wrote Rutte on platform “X”.

Otherwise, Trump had prompted reactions in February this year, with several statements challenging NATO's unitary character. Speaking at a political rally in South Carolina, he had said the US might not protect allies who do not spend enough on defence, if attacked by Russia.
I won't protect you. In fact, I would encourage [Russia] to do whatever the hell it wants. You have to pay. You have to pay your bills” Trump said.
