Initial results show pro-Western president Sandu won the second term.
After all votes were counted, Moldova's Central Election Commission (KQZ) stressed that Sandu won 55.33 per cent of the vote, while its prorus opponent, Alexander Stoionoglo, won 44.67 per cent of the vote.
Sandu's victory was relief for Moldova's Western partners, who immediately described it as evidence that democracy could triumph against Russian intervention.
I wish Maia Sandun to re-election historical as president of Moldova. For months, Russia has sought to undermine Moldova's democratic institutions and the election process. But, Russia failed”, Beden said in a communique.
The Moldovan people have exercised the democratic right to choose their future and have chosen to follow a path related to Europe and other democracies”, he added.
During Sandu's first term, Moldova secured the candidate country's status for EU membership in 2022, and opened membership talks earlier this year after being listed alongside its eastern neighbour, Ukraine, after Russia began its invasion in 2022, and joined EU sanctions against Moscow.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the election outcome helps strengthen Moldova's path towards Euro-Atlantic integration.
Dear Maia Sandu's victory over tonight. A rare kind of force is needed to overcome the challenges you faced in this election”, von der Leyeen wrote in X.
Ukraine's president, Voldymyr Zelensky, welcomed Sandy's victory through an X message, saying Moldovans have made “a clear option” towards Western integration.
Shortly after midnight on November 4th, when it became clear that its supremacy, raised by diaspora votes, was invincible, the cheerful Sandu told its supporters: “Moldavi, you are the winner! ”
Today, beloved Moldovans, you have taught a lesson in democracy, which is worth writing in history books. Today, you have saved Moldova! She added”.
Stoianoglo, a former general prosecutor backed by the prorus Socialist Party, called on supporters to be calm, as his initial supremacy narrowed down as the votes from the big cities and the western diaspora of Moldova were counted.
However, the Socialists later released a communique, saying they do not recognise Sandu's victory because it was based on votes from abroad. /Radio Europe Free
