This decision by the United States, about two months before newly elected President Donald Trump takes office on January 20th, comes after for months Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had demanded that his country's army be allowed to use American weapons to strike Russian military targets far from the border.
The change of policy comes after the deployment of North Korean troops to help Russian forces -- a development that has alarmed Washington and Kiev.
The first deep attacks are likely to be carried out using ATACMS missiles, which have an action ray of up to 306km, according to sources.
While some American officials have voiced scepticism if allowing long-range attacks could succeed in changing the trajectory of the war, the decision could help Ukraine at a moment when Russian forces are marking advances on the ground and perhaps deploy Kiev to a better negotiating position if peace talks are held.
It is not clear whether President-elect Trump will change President Beden's decision when he takes office. Mr. Trump has criticised the degree of financial and military aid the United States has given to Ukraine and has vowed to end the war without explaining how.
However, some elected Republicans in Congress have asked President Beden to ease the rules on Ukrainian use of weapons supplied by the United States.
Russia has warned that easing restrictions on the use of American weapons from Ukraine would present a major escalation. / VOA
