Regarding this decision by the North Mitrovica municipality, the US Embassy in Pristina has spoken.
An American Embassy spokesman has said they are aware of such a decision by North Mitrovica's local government that has made a decision through which he has demanded that employees of several Serbian government offices leave the building where they have operated within a three-day term.
From the US Embassy, new heads of four municipalities in the north have repeated the circumstances, and have stressed that a number of American officials have expressed expectations that these elected mayors, including North Mitrovica, will make special efforts to respond to the concerns of all residents and community members.
“While we acknowledge that April 2023 municipal elections in four municipalities in northern Kosovo were required with the Kosovo law and we have recognised the results as legitimate, given the extremely low voter turnout in those elections, a number of American officials have expressed our expectations that these elected mayors, including North Mitrovica, will make special efforts to respond to the concerns of all residents and members of the country”, a US Embassy spokesman in Pristina has said.
From the American Embassy in Pristina to Express argue that they have consistently advised the Government of Kosovo, including the mayors of northern municipalities to refrain from decisions that increase tensions or may be perceived as escalation.
The US Embassy says such actions “uncoordinated with the international community” are incompatible even with US demands to avoid actions that could increase tensions or that could be perceived as escalation.
“We have repeatedly advised the Kosovo government, including the mayors of northern municipalities, to refrain from undertaking any action that increases tensions or can be perceived as escalations.
We consider these actions, which have not been co-ordinated with the international community, as incompatible with our demands to avoid actions that could escalate tensions or be perceived as escalation”, has concluded this US Embassy spokesman in Pristina for Gazette Express.
