Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the Brics summit in South Africa in August “with mutual agreements”. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will take his place, writes The Guardian.
“With joint agreements, President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation will not participate in the summit, but the Russian Federation will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov”, the African presidency's announcement reported.
On Tuesday, South Africa's president, Cyril Ramaphosa, had requested permission from the JNP not to arrest Putin, because this would constitute “war crimes”, according to a local court pretre.
On Wednesday, Russia has said it had not told South Africa that Putin's arrest by orders from the JNP would mean <x0... War”.
South Africa will host the summit of Brics countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa next month. But the JNA has an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of war crimes of deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.
South Africa, as a member of the JNP, is obliged to arrest Putin if he personally participates in the summit.
