He is facing new charges of extremism that could keep him in prison for decades.
The trial opened at the high-security prison in Melechovo, 250km east of Moscow, where Navlany is spending nine years in court for fraud and contempt.
Navalny spoke of the weakness of this case and called new charges of extremism that he could be held in prison for 30 years.
He said that an investigator told him that Navajo could also face a military division trial over charges of terrorism that could potentially carry life sentence.
