The UK has called for the immediate release of three Kosovo police officers arrested on 14 June by Serb forces in northern Kosovo.
Kosovo considers the arrest of three police officials as kidnapping by Serbia's authorities on its territory. According to the Kosovo Police, police officials have been arrested in the Tresave/Bare, located in the municipality of Leposaviqi, within Kosovo's territory.
Belgrade, on the other hand, claims it is not about kidnapping, but the arrest of police officers on Serbian territory.
Two days later, Serbia's authorities have yet to provide any information concerning those arrested.
“We urge Kosovo and Serbia to exercise maximum restraint, avoid unilateral measures and take immediate action to reduce tensions”, said a British government report.
Through this statement, the state's call to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and his government was repeated to ensure that elected mayors of municipalities perform their transitional duties from alternative locations outside municipal buildings and that Kosovo Police Special Units be withdrawn from municipal buildings.
New, comprehensive elections should be announced as soon as possible. We wait and encourage Kosovo Serbs to participate in these elections”, the statement says.
The British government also called on Kosovo and Serbia “to engage immediately in the EU-launched dialogue, and in particular to start working without further delays for the establishment of the majority Serbian Communist Association”.
Some diplomatic sources have told Radio Free Europe that the word is for a meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq.
It is not specified whether this meeting will be organised under dialogue between the two countries that are mediating the EU.
Tensions in northern Kosovo are high from 26 May, when the new Albanian mayors in the north ʹ inhabited by Serb majority have entered municipal buildings.
Local Serbs have rejected something like this and are constantly protesting in front of municipal buildings from May 29th.
