During a speech on the occasion of Germany's 78th anniversary of the Second World War, the Ukrainian president said he does not yet know the date of victory, but added that that day would be a holiday for all Ukraine, for Europe and the whole free world.
And all the old evil that is returning modern Russia will be destroyed just as Nazism” was destroyed, Zelensky said as his country fights full-scale invasion by the Kremlin forces, foreign media wrote.
He also submitted a bill to parliament that would formalise the daily shift rather than commemorate the German surrender.
This would distance Ukraine from Soviet tradition to mark victory over Nazi forces on May 9, a day later than in western parts of Europe.
The German Army surrendered to the Soviet, US, Great Britain and France on May 8, 1945, but as the documents were signed on May 9th in Moscow's time zone, Victory Day is traditionally celebrated this day in Russia and in many other post-Soviet states.
“In the future, Ukraine must commemorate the victims of World War II along with the free world”, Zelensky said.
He signed a decree saying that Europe's Day will be celebrated on 9 May in Ukraine, as it is in the European Union.
