Former Ambassador Spahiu: Proposed statute for Association violates principles of Kosovo independence

Former Kosovo Ambassador to the United States Avni Spahiu said the statute for Association of Serb majority municipalities, presented on 2 May in Brussels, violates the fundamental principles of Kosovo's independence. “Linked to Association, be a union of municipalities that does not endanger Kosovo's sovereignty at all, but makes you [...]
“In terms of association, be a union of municipalities that does not endanger Kosovo's sovereignty at all, but makes it possible for Kosovo Serbs to accept Kosovo as their country”, he said.
Spahiu estimates that any solution to the rights of the Serb minority in Kosovo should be applied to other minorities in the region, including the Albanian minority Presevo Valley in Serbia.
There will be such developments, it is something inevitable, even with regard to other minorities living to catch it in Serbia, Macedonia and other countries. So in a way this opens the box of Pandora to make such situations happen. Of course the situation of Albanians in the Presevo Valley is not to call it alarming, due to a passive discrimination being organised”, he said, in a conversation with the Voice of America.
Spahiu currently heads the Kosovo Ambassador Council, which, he says, aims, among other things, to support the country in realising state interests in international relations.
Kosovo currently has over 50 former ambassadors that have served and are no longer in service. They want to make their contribution in terms of the consultation and free support of our foreign ministry or anyone who wants to have our services”, he said.
Within the framework of the co-operation the Kosovo Ambassador Council has with the American Ambassador Council, eight former American ambassadors remained in Pristina this week.
The leader of this Council, former Ambassador Timothy Chorba, said in a conversation with the Voice of America that the purpose of the visit is to announce the US delegation to key political issues in the region and its expectations for the future.
He said the progress Kosovo has marked in recent years is extraordinary.
I was here four years ago and I've been out of COVID-19, but it's extraordinary physical development, construction, modernization. But most importantly, a new state is being built and developed under democratic principles, so when you think about it, it has been a very good investment of the United States”, he said.
Chorba said that Kosovo's will on the path of integration is clear and that he expects to see that member in multilateral organisations, in a not too distant future.
“would expect it to be in NATO's interest to make Kosovo its member at some point, in a not too distant future, when NATO decides it is appropriate. Kosovo has the will and will to join the European Union, NATO and other multilateral organisations, and as one American word says, there is a will and a” road, said Mr. Chorba.
He praised Kosovo's partnership with the United States high, while specifically expressing gratitude for the housing of Afghan refugees in Kosovo.
