The package includes rockets for its F-16 aircraft fleet, at a time when 21 Chinese fighter planes conducted an explosion in the last 24 hours in the island's airspace.
The movement, expected to toughen strained relations between Washington and Beijing, will enable Taiwan to further strengthen air space protection.
Announcing the US administration's decision, the Pentagon has clarified that the State Department has approved the sale of weapons to the Asian island, which includes 200 medium-range air-air missiles and 100 rockets capable of bringing down radar stations.
The Defence Ministry in Taiwan has stated in its response that the missiles will help effectively protect the airspace to withstand threats and provocations of the Chinese communist Army.
China continues to consider Taiwan an impossible part of its territory and has warned several times that it is willing to use force to protect the politics of one China.
But the 23 million-strong island refuses to accept Chinese domination and intends to maintain its independence. /Euronews/
