The Plumpang fuel storage station, operated by the state oil and gas company Pertamine, is near a densely populated area in the Tanah Merah neighbourhood in Jakarta. It supplies 25 percent of Indonesia's fuel needs.
At least 260 firefighters and 52 fire vehicles put out the fire.
The images showed hundreds of people running in panic as heavy black smoke and orange flames filled the sky.
A preliminary investigation showed that the fire broke out when a pipeline broke through heavy rain, probably caused by a lightning strike, said Echo Kristiawan, the manager of the Pertamina area for the western part of Java.
