Public broadcaster YLEU reported that construction began with removing trees on both sides of the border point Imatara.
The original test fence will be 3km long and will be completed by the end of June, writes Anadolu.
Finland's Border Guard said changing the security environment due to the war in Ukraine made the fence construction necessary.
“According to our plan, a fence should be built for a distance of about 200 kilometers along our 1,300-mile-long eastern border. The main part of the obstacle will be placed on the southeastern border, which is the border control area”, the Finnish guard's announcement said.
Construction is expected to last three to four years, depending on the financial situation.
