Montenegro's President Milo Djukanovic has not yet decided whether to run in the 19 March elections.
“I've been in Montenegro's political life for thirty years, I think that someone who does the same work for three decades has the right to feel tired and has the right to reason that maybe it would be better for society if there was a new candidate”, he said in Munich, where he is currently participating in the Security Conference.
“We are seeing who can better help Montenegro turn on the sustainable path to Euro-Atlantic development after two and a half years of wandering,” added the president of the Democratic Party of Socialists.
Asked what it would advise Belgrade and Pristina to continue the dialogue, Djukanovic said: “there is no other way for a deal. All other ideas such as maintaining a frozen conflict are actually the function of the doctrine of destroying the Balkans as the European region”.
Djukanovic thinks progress is that both sides have accepted the basic text of the Franco-German plan. “E knows that in the coming days, discussions will continue in Brussels on the accompanying document, the implementation plan. I hope that even for this, we can reach a” agreement.
Djukanovic said that the intensity of the EU enlargement policy has decreased in recent years and “as a result, the enthusiasm of reforms in all countries in the region”.
“Ukrainian called attention to the geopolitical importance of the integration of the Western Balkans, and it seems to me that the European Union is turning to an active enlargement policy. I believe that this will inspire the new government, which I expect in Montenegro this year, to fully devote itself to reforms and achieve its target as soon as we can, he said.
“I think it's realistic, I think Montenegro has the best chance of being the first and future member of the European Union”, is convinced Djukanovic.
Montenegro's president stressed that his country has fully harmonised its policy towards Russia with Brussels and that it has imposed sanctions. “Montenegro is not an enemy of Russia, Montenegro is an enemy of aggression. Montenegro is the enemy of destroying international law. Montenegro is the enemy of all ideas that seek to limit the sovereign choice of the future to independent states, as in the case of Ukraine”.
Asked when the war in Ukraine could end, Djukanovic said that even Vladimir Putin probably doesn't know that either.
I think at this moment the peace initiative is still not being addressed with the necessary seriousness and speed. At the same time, I want this to be an appeal to unite all the constructive international policies to help Ukraine, but also Russia, despite the fact that it is in another position, in the position of the aggressor, to get out of that war conflict and prevent further life loss”, writes Deutsche Welle
