US President Joe Biden said there must be a <x0pause<x1 humanitarian> in the Israeli-Hamas war after his speech during an election rally was interrupted Wednesday evening by a protester who called for a ceasefire.
“
This statement presents a change in attitude, as Biden and his helpers throughout the Middle East crisis have been steadfast in their statements that they will not dictate how the Israelites will carry out their military operations in response to the October 7th attack of the Palestinian militants in Hamas.
But the American president has faced mounting pressure from human rights groups, from world leaders, but also from the most liberal members of his party, who have said Israel's bombings in Gaza are collective punishments and that it is time for a ceasefire.
In his statement, Biden pressured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah to offer Palestinians at least a brief break from the ongoing military operation that has left thousands dead and plunged the Gaza Strip into a humanitarian disaster.
The White House has refused to call for ceasefire, but has signalled that the Israelites should consider the possibility of a humanitarian pause to allow civilians to get help and that foreign citizens in Gaza leave this territory.
Israeli land troops have advanced near the city of Gaza, while engaged in fierce combat with militants, the military said the day before. Meanwhile, hundreds of foreign citizens and dozens of heavily injured Palestinians were allowed to leave Gaza for Egypt after more than three weeks under siege.
