Dr. Aiswarya Ahliwale, physical therapist at SRV Hospitals, explained that staying in a bad position can lead to increased muscle tension and lower blood flow to the brain, potentially affecting cognitive function.

Dr. K V Shinand Reddy, neurosurgeon at CAR Hospitals, added that staying in a bad position can affect your body language, confidence and the way others perceive you, which can indirectly affect your mental state and your brain health.

A good attitude, on the other hand, can improve the flow of oxygen and help reduce strain on the neck and the back, which can positively affect brain health.

“While the connection is not fully understood, maintaining a good attitude through regular exercise and ergonomic practices can contribute to overall well-being, including brain health”, Dr Ahliwale added.

Are there ways to repair the damage?

The return of damage caused by a poor position in brain health depends largely on the extent and duration of the issue, according to Ahliwale.

Dr Reddy recommended involvement in physical therapy to strengthen your muscles and eventually improve your attitude. Moreover, care, ergonomic adjustments at work, and house configurations can significantly reduce the load on the back and neck.

In the most severe cases, medical intervention may also be necessary. It is important to note that while improved and eased damage is possible, a complete change of serious and long-term damage may not always be reachable, Dr Ahliwale said.

The early “intervention and a sustainable commitment to good standing are essential”, she said.
