Russia has failed in its bid to return to its highest body United Nations for Human Rights.
Russia received 83 votes against 160 for Bulgaria and 123 for Albania, which had competed against it in the same grouping of Eastern Europe for two countries at the Geneva-based Human Rights Council.
UN member states sent a strong signal to the Russian leadership that a government responsible for countless war crimes and crimes against humanity does not belong there,” said Louis Charbonneau, director of the United Nations in Human Rights Watch.
To that end, there was no reaction from Moscow.
By contrast, the United Nations General Assembly had suspended Russia from the Human Rights Council in April 2022 after reporting “on systematic violations and human rights abuse” by Russian troops occupying Ukraine.
This requirement, put forward by the United States, has been approved by 93 votes per, 24 against and 58 states have abstained.
Such results are rare.
Libya has been suspended in 2011 due to violence against protesters by former elite loyal forces, Muammar Gaddhafi
