Vuciq: Serbia will not recognise Kosovo directly, nor indirectly

Until I have influence, Serbia will not recognise either directly or indirectly Kosovo's unilateral independence”, Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq said. “I will not give up my legitimate fight for state and national interests, as well as for respecting international law”, he said. “I will not give up my legitimate fight for state and national interests, as well as for respecting international law”, he said.

Vuciq made comments at the first session of Serbia's new Parliament legislature, where the negotiation process between Kosovo and Serbia is in order to normalise relations.

The only point of the agenda in this session is the Serbian Government's report for negotiations held with Kosovo over a year, from June 15th 2021 to September 1st 2022, respectively.

Kosovo and Serbia have started dialogue on normalising relations since 2011.

The sides have reached dozens of agreements, but implementation of them on the ground has stalled.

The process must result in legally binding agreements. Kosovo insists this agreement include mutual recognition; Serbia, for now, refuses.

Referring to the war in Ukraine, Vuciq said the “hysteria of the international community due to the conflict in Europe also reflects in Serbia”.

This puts Serbia “in an even more difficult situation for resolving the Kosovo issue”, Vuciq said.

Kosovo is an independent state since 2008.

The International Court of Justice has concluded in 2010 that its independence “does not conflict with international law”.

Speaking before Serbia's Parliament, Vucic said that the “real policy cannot rely on myths and fantasies”.

According to him, the difference should be made between “reality and opportunity” to fight as a state and as a nation “to what we say is most important to us”.

He said the task is to ensure in the spaces where there are Serbs and Albanians, to ensure a better life for them.

This difficult task must be carried out so that Serbs can survive as a state and as a people”, he said.

“The space in which we work is such that the possibilities for progress and improvement are few, while the chances of going to the abyss are quite light and, if we use the wrong policy, almost certain”, the president of Serbia said.

Speaking of the current situation in Kosovo, Vucic said that “we are faced with major security challenges”, and that the increased admission of Pristina security forces in northern Kosovo has been observed “

In the northern part of Kosovo, where the majority is Serb, parallel organs of Serbia also function.

Serbia's Assembly hearing is also being attended by members of the Serbian List of Serbs in Kosovo.

Seanca for Kosovo was urged by specific opposition groups in Serbia's Parliament éveri, the People's Party, the Hope coalition (Nada).

On September 6th, the People's Party submitted its proposal for the Kosovo resolution to the Parliament, and three days later the same was done by the right-wing movement Dvery.

In the People's Party document, whose leader is former diplomacy chief Vuk Jeremic, it is said Serbia does not recognise and will never recognise Kosovo's independence.

Also proposed, a proposal to assess the constitutionality and legitimacy of all agreements signed within Brussels' dialogue is submitted to the Constitutional Court of Serbia.

The precondition for continuing talks with Pristina, according to the People's Party, is forming the Association of Major Serb municipalities in Kosovo, which is envisioned with the Brussels Agreement.

The resolution proposed by Dveri says that no one who holds public office has the right to sign a binding document for Kosovo's independence.

It is also required that the Government of Serbia take over the interruption of communication and negotiations with Pristina, as well as the annulment of agreements reached. Passing negotiations from Brussels to the UN Security Council is proposed.

Dveri suggests Serbia's Government seeks Russia's help and support China Two of Serbia's allied countries, which do not recognise Kosovo.
