Seoul said the release was a “act severe provocation”.
The UN prohibits North Korea from testing ballistic and nuclear weapons.
The South Korean Army said it discovered a short-range rocket launched just before 7:00 p.m. at the local time of (11:00 GMT) near Taechon, more than 100km (60 miles) north of gyan.
