The United States has given Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov a visa to travel to New York to attend the annual meeting of the United Nations Organisation of World Leaders next week, a Russian diplomatic source said on Tuesday.
Moscow had asked Washington for 56 visas, according to a letter dated 2 September to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, from Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia.
The Russian diplomatic source told Reuters on Tuesday that the United States had approved 24 visas.
Nebenzia had also noted in his letter that the flight crew for Lavrov's plane had not received visas. It was not immediately clear whether Washington had given visas to the Russian flight crew or whether Lavrov would be expected to fly on commercial airlines to New York.
The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The UN General Assembly summit begins on 20 September.
According to the 1947 UN Headquarters “agreement, the United States is generally required to allow entry for foreign diplomats under the UN, but Washington says it could reject visas for security reasons, terrorism and foreign policy.
