Truss, who met with United States President Joe Biden and France's Emmanuel Macron in New York last week on her first trip abroad as prime minister, called on democratic countries to be placed against “autocratic regimes”.
The British prime minister said the Russian president was escalating his aggression in Ukraine because he was not winning and that he had made a strategic mistake.
President Putin ordered a partial troop mobilization last week and cited the possibility of a nuclear conflict.
“I think he had not anticipated the force of reaction from the free world,” Truss said in an interview for CNN, broadcast on Sunday.
We must not attach any importance to his false threats. We must continue to impose sanctions on Russia and continue to support Ukrainian”, she said.
Truss, who took office earlier this month, has taken a harsh stand against Russia and China.
But it has also had differences with some traditional allies, especially in Europe and the United States, over trade agreements with the European Union after Brex.
The British prime minister said she continues to want a negotiated solution on the so-called Northern Ireland protocol, that she and President Biden agree that peace must be maintained and that she believes in the “special relations” between Britain and the United States.
I think our relationship is special and is increasingly important at a time when we are facing threats from Russia, (and) in the face of China's challenge,” said Trus.
I am determined to make the relationship more special over the next few years. ”
Truss said he had a very good <x0);x1> meeting with French President Macro in New York.
I expect to work with her in the future,” she said.
She said Britain's allies should work together in their attitude towards China as well as Russia.
Asked if Britain would defend Taiwan militarily if China intervened, as the United States has said, Mrs. Truss said: “We are determined to work with our allies to make sure that Taiwan is able to protect itself. ”
