Taiwan's Armed Forces have opened fire Tuesday against civilian fears thought to be controlled by China, shortly after Taiwan President Tsai Ing Wen called for strong “ ” measures in the face of this type of encouragement.
The island's Defence Ministry has confirmed in a statement that there have been shots fired against at least three drones. Although it has not identified their origin, it has explained that these planes have been pulled toward the Chinese town of Xiamen, Bloomberg reports.
“I have ordered the National Defence Ministry to take strong and necessary measures to protect the security of air space”, Tsai said, during a speech to the military in which he warned that Taiwan would not stand back.
The president has thus responded to criticism of the apparent lack of reaction to the growing presence of fears. Chinese newspaper “Global Times” points out in a letter that the incidents show the military protection of “dubs” of the island.
Tension in the area has increased since US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in early August. Beijing responded with its largest military maneuvers to make it clear that he continues to have much in mind his sovereign claims on the island. / A2 CNN/
