US President Joe Biden, in his address Tuesday, said that “justice was brought to the country” and hoped Zawiri's death would bring peace to the families of 3,000 people killed in the September 11th attacks. The leader of Al Qaeda stood behind the 2001 attacks and was among the most wanted terrorists in the world.
Since replacing bin Laden in 2011, Zawahir was in charge of Al Qaedas, so with Zawahir's murder, the terrorist group faces a subsequent crisis.
According to an institute from the Middle East, Saif al-Adel is expected to come to the helm of the organisation. The former military officer from Egypt was a founding member of Al Qaedas, according to American Intelligence agencies.
Saif al-Adel had previously been Osama bin Laden's security adviser and is now on the FBI's list of most wanted persons since 2001 and the reward for information about him has now reached $10m.
