Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, had announced days earlier that the parade would be cancelled due to internal problems in Serbia. The announcement was conveyed with criticism inside.
“Licenses of the peaceful gathering and expression are essential components of a healthy democracy. We call on Serbia to renew its commitment to host #EuroPride2022. LGBT rights are human rights”, wrote the US secretary in Titter.
Over the criticism of the annulment, there has been support. A major protest organised Sunday in Belgrade gathered thousands of people seeking the protection of Orthodox and family values.
As for the rights of the LGBT community, the US and the European Union are asking Serbia to hold this parade something the Serbian Orthodox Church opposes.
Freedoms of peaceful assembly and expansion are essential companies of a health democracy. We asked Serbia to return its transmission to hosting #Euro Pride2022. LGBTQI+ rights are human rights.
