Gotabaya Rajapapasa president of Sri Lanka has fled the country that led him through a military plane for years amid massive protests over the economic crisis that has plagued the Asian state.
The country's Air Force confirmed that 73-year-old flew to Maldive with his wife and two security officials.
They arrived in the capital, Male, about three o'clock local time, have shown BBC sources, broadcast Express.
The departure of Rajapapasa ends a family dynasty that has ruled Sri Lanka for decades.
The president had been hiding after the crowds entered his residence on Saturday and had vowed to resign Wednesday 13 July.
A source told the BBC that Rajapapax will not stay on Maldives and aims to travel to a third country.
His brother, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaxa, has also left Sri Lanka and is said to be going to the US.
