Because of the war in Ukraine, Poland is arming itself. Recent agreements with South Korea include hundreds of fighter aircraft, tanks and artillery weapons.

Poland's Defence Minister Mariusz Blazczak announced he has signed arms purchase agreements because Poland has learned lessons from fighting Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Time is short and we must equip the Polish army. ” he said.

Under the agreements Poland will receive about a thousand tanks, about 650 balls and mortars and 48 fighter aircraft. The first 12 FA-50 fighter planes are scheduled to arrive in Poland in 2023 and replace the old Soviet-made aircraft. The Korea Aerospace Industries North Korean arms concert announced it would gradually shift the production of FA-50 fighter aircraft to Poland.

Information about the costs of the arms deal was not provided, but reports from South Korea are about several billion U.S. dollars.

Preparation Against Possible Threat From Russia

Poland, which is a member of the EU and NATO, is one of Ukraine's largest military and political supporters and is heavily armed against a Russian threat. In recent months Poland has ordered more than 300 American tanks and ground-air rocket systems from the European consortium MBDA, as well as more than 30 military helicopters of Italian production.

The Warsaw government has also started to significantly increase the number of soldiers last year, even before the Russian attack in Ukraine. If we want to avoid the worst, that is, war, we have to act on the old rule of prevention, justifying the decision then, Yaroslav Kazhinski, leader of the ruling PIS party. / DW/
