The date of early voting is scheduled for September 25th. The head of state announced that Draghi's government will remain in office until after the elections, when the next cabinet arrives.
The “The period we are going through does not allow pauses in much needed measures to fight the social and economic effects of the crisis, and especially the increasing inflation, which is largely caused by increased cost of energy and food, causing serious consequences for families and businesses”, Mattarella said.
Draghi leaves a year and a half after being appointed the unelected head of a unity government. This was after three parties of his ruling coalition refused to back the vote of confidence held in the Senate during Wednesday. The outgoing prime minister thanked his associates, stressing that he is proud to have served his citizens.
What plunged his political coalition into crisis was Movement 5 Stella's refusal to support the economic package. Parties expected to benefit most from the crisis include Mateo Salvin's Lega and Silvio Bersulcion's Italy Forza. However, polls are led by Fratelli d'Italia with leader Giorga Mellon, who is projected to be the country's next prime minister. / A2 CNN
