The United States has put former Paraguay president Horacio Cartes on the blacklist for alleged involvement in corruption and links to terrorist groups.
The US State Department sanction Cartes and his three grown children for corruption, accusing him of obstructing an international criminal investigation. Cartes served as president of the South American country from 2013 to 2018.
“Former President Cartes prevented a major international investigation into transnational crime to protect himself and his criminal associate from possible prosecution and political damage”, State Secretary Antony Blinken said in a statement.
“These actions undermined the stability of Paraguay's democratic institutions by contributing to public perception of corruption and impunity within Paraguay President's office”.
Blinken also accused Cartes of involvement with foreign terrorist organisations and other US-defined entities, not to mention them.
Brazil issued an arrest warrant against Cartes in 2019 on charges of money laundering. The former president denied the charges and said he would be made available for an investigation into Paraguay.
Cartes, a business tycoon, is considered to be one of the richest people in Paraguay, reports AlJazeera, broadcasts Klankosova.tv.
