The programme predicts that some 66.4 million people in the African region will experience a food or famine by July.
“Studies in the food system caused by extreme weather events, epidemics of pests and diseases, political and market instability and conflicts are becoming more frequent and serious, putting more and more people at risk of food shortages”, the statement said.
It also notes that the war in Ukraine further exacerbates the effects by damaging the global food, fuel and garbage market.
The Bank said its Food and Resistance Programme for East and South Africa will focus on Ethiopia, where some 22.7 million people have food problems due to drought, and south of the continent, where Madagascar has 7.8 million people waiting for food aid.
