Taiwanese authorities said the earthquake, which occurred at 15:23 on Monday, was 27 miles [27 km] below the surface of the earth.
The episode was registered 89.4km from the eastern coast of Taiwan, roughly halfway between the bank of Hualien County and the southern Japanese island of Yonaguni, the country's weather bureau said.
The quake could be felt throughout Taiwan, the bureau added, until the buildings were shaken for a short time in the capital of Taipei.
