After German opposition deputy Michael Brand, The CDU, even the politicians and Social Democrat positions, Frank Schwabe and Addis Ahmetovovic, have voiced in a joint press statement, published on Friday, 1305. Their support for Kosovo's application for membership in the Council of Europe:
We welcome and support Kosovo's application for membership to the Council of Europe. Kosovo, like the entire Western Balkan region, is an integral part of Europe and the European family. This should be expressed, especially in view of the war in Ukraine”, the two MPs have written.
Schwabe is chairman of Germany's parliamentary delegation to the Council of Europe, while Ahmetovic is leading rapporteur for the Western Balkans at the Foreign Affairs Commission for the parliamentary group of Social Democrats in the German Parliament.
They have expressed faithfulness that Kosovo will achieve two-thirds necessary for membership in the Council of Europe and have stressed their commitment within the EU to normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia and to visa liberalisation for Kosovo citizens.
The two MPs see Kosovo membership in the Council of Europe as well as “as a chance to make progress on these two questions”.
Two Social Democrats -- the party, which also belongs to Chancellor Olaf Scholz -- thus reinforces Germany's commitment to the Western Balkans with this statement. The current government, comprised of the Social Democrats (SPD), The Green, and Liberals (FDP), has declared the Western Balkans a priority since the government coalition deal.
Earlier, CDU deputy Michael Brand had also asked the German government to take concrete steps to support Kosovo on its journey to the Council of Europe.
It is now important that the federal government not only talk but also act actively. The Federal Chancellor and foreign minister have personally assured the Kosovo leadership of their support. This should now be reflected in concrete”, Brand had written in his statement to the media Thursday in 1205, shortly after Kosovo submitted the application in Strasbourg. /dw
