French European Affairs Minister Clement Beaune said European Union members could reach an agreement this week for the European Commission's proposal to stop all oil imports from Russia.
I think we can reach agreement this week”, Beaune told LCI television.
He added that French President Emmanuel Macron, later in May 10th, will talk to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the issue.
Hungary is the biggest critic of the embargo on Russian oil.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday she has made progress in talks with Orban on the issue.
On May 4th, von der Leyeen presented the EC proposal as part of the sixth package of EU sanctions against Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.
The Commission predicts the EU will fully give up Russian crude oil and refined products by the end of the year. But to adopt this sixth package of sanctions requires the unanimous support of the 27 member states of the European bloc. /Rel
