The United States believes Washington's commitments remain useful and we continue to call on Kosovo and Serbia to focus on the EU-led dialogue”, said in a UN response to the Voice of America in the Serbian edition.
“However, Kosovo and Serbia are sovereign countries and rightly define foreign policy priorities. The decision on membership in these programmes and organisations requires the consent and approval of their institutions and member states”, the State Department's response is further said.

During this week, the State Department said that the mortorium “was created to expand the space for talks and compromise between Kosovo and Serbia, which we believe is in the strategic interest of both countries”, without requiring its respect.
On 12 May, Kosovo has submitted membership application to the Council of Europe.
