“If there is the possibility for such a thing, we will certainly do it”, said the Secretary of the Ukraine's Council for Defence and Security, Olexity Danilov.
In 2014, after months of protests against Ukraine's pro-Russian president that resulted in his ousting, Putin ordered Ukraine's annexation of Crime. He then supported pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine who fought Ukrainian soldiers in an eight-year war that killed 14,000 lives.
Despite years of Western sanctions, Russia maintains control of the Crime, which it seized following a referendum widely considered illegal. Earlier, on March 16, 2014, a controversial and globally condemned referendum was held, where Moscow said 96.77% of the Crimean residents chose to join Russia.
