The Dutch national police handed the handcuffed Hernández to DEA agents at Tegucigalpa Airport just over two months after he was arrested outside his home on February 15th after an extradition request from the US Department of Justice, reports The Guardian.
Hernández left office on January 27th after two terms as president. He is accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes from violent drug traffickers in exchange for protection from law enforcement, drug trafficking conspiracy and two arms-related charges, which carry a minimum sentence of 40 years in prison.
Hernández has repeatedly denied any involvement with drug traffickers, describing the charges as lies made by criminals trying to lower their sentences through co-operation.
