“Meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin is a dangerous but important mission to build bridges for dialogue”. So said Chancellor Carl Nehammer to the Austrian press before his departure for Moscow today.
Nehammer reiterated that he during his meeting with Putin would not hesitate to mention “war crimes” committed in Ukraine as well.
“Speaking does not mean quitting”, he added. According to the Austrian Chancellor, “must do everything that can be done to help the Ukrainian people and stop the fight”. We need “personal diplomacy”, he continued.
The goals of this meeting -- the first of a leader of a European Union state -- since the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24th -- are a possible dialogue between Zelenski and Putin, a ceasefire or humanitarian corridor.
Nehammer said he wants to “does everything to be able to take steps towards peace”, even if the chances of achieving something are slim, he acknowledged.
