Ukrainian negotiator said dialogue would focus on establishing a ceasefire, attracting Russian troops and security guarantees for Ukraine.
Talks will resume on Tuesday after a “technical pause”, so the Ukrainian presidential adviser, Mykhaylo Podolyak, announced.
But fighting continued with a bombing in Kiev where one person was killed after a block of buildings was hit.
Meanwhile, in Marioupol, a pregnant woman died, along with her baby, reports the BBC, broadcasts Clankosova.tv.
Russian bombings in some cities have been so intense that dead civilians are being buried in mass graves, including Mariupol.
China says the claim of American officials that Russia asked Beijing to provide military assistance to Ukraine is “dezination”, while the Kremlin also denied it.
Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Secretary Michael Gove will determine the details of a scheme for people to expect Ukrainian refugees in their homes.
