Zelensky has been questioned on many issues, ranging from what is sometimes sleeping to compromises.
Periscopbrings them in for full interview:
BILD: Mr. President, the people in Germany are asking themselves: How are you doing, ever sleeping?
Zelensky: In all the occupied areas of the country and in all other places where our blue flag waves, people are not sleeping much. We've been defending our country for two weeks now.
BILD: We're seeing a lot of videos of your wife and family. You're on Moscow's murder list. What does that mean for your family?
Zelensky: They're proud of me. They're proud of me being Ukrainian. They realize I could have left for security by now. But they understand and support my decision because it is the decision of our country. They want Kiev to stay strong. Of course, as a human nature, they care about me, but their hearts are always with me. It's the history of our country and we're living right now. Later we will remember how difficult it was and how bad it was for every resident in our country. But we'll remember the moments most when we changed something. Our goal is to empower our country, no matter how difficult it is. I do this for my children and my grandchildren. I don't wanna be a pusher.
BILD: The world is guessing how close the Russians are, maybe days or hours from Kiev. How is Kiev surrounded? How far are you from being surrounded, Mr. President?
Zelensky: The roads to Kiev are blocked. But we're here. And you can personally assess the situation in Kiev. I don't care where the enemy is hiding, or how close he is. I care about our country, water supplies, food supplies. I worry about Marioupolis, Donesk, Melitopol, Kharkiv- about the terrible situation there. People are without water and no food. What's happening in Marioupol is a humanitarian disaster. The humanitarian aid columns have been sent to our country, but they're being shot with bullets, Russian soldiers aren't letting them in. We have brave drivers who are not stopping despite promotions. Yesterday we agreed to work with the Red Cross. I understand how human beings, we always worry about our lives. However, we must put first humanitarian aid. We don't have any general solution or steps we can take right now. We have a real terror to our history.
BILD: I'm afraid Kiev will be surrounded. You're not scared?
Zelensky: I'm not scared. Fear of what? I shouldn't be afraid, I remain calm. Do you know how someone can overcome fear? What could be worse than fear? What could be the worst that could happen? Their place, my place?
The worst that could have happened has already happened. We have a Russian war against Ukraine. So many people have died. The place is destroyed. What could be worse for the people who lost their children? But we believe in the future. We will not give up, we will not sell our land.
BILD: Germany further rejects the embargo on oil and gas imports from Russia? Are you disappointed with Chancellor Scholz and the German people who are no longer backing you?
Zelensky: I cannot judge Germany's actions. The government first thinks of its own country, and this should not go unnoticed. Many people in Germany support Ukraine. The Chancellor's government has been elected by the people and I think we should stick to it. We've seen some steps Germany is supporting us, with sanctions on Nord Stream 2. We're seeing what Germany's doing. I don't want to judge Mr. Scholz and his government. I'll do that after we see the results and see how the war ends, how many victims they are. For us, every minute is precious, every minute people can die. I just heard the news that the children's hospital in Mariupol was attacked. I still have no information about the victims, but I really hope people are able to hide. How could that happen? They're animals that do things like that. What's going on in their head? If a rocket hits the children's hospital in Germany, then what? Imagine yourself in our situation, we would discuss and negotiate. This is our pain today and I need solutions today.
BILD: What about membership in the European Union?
Zelensky: “governments that do not support EU membership refer to some reforms that need to take place. They don't see us as equals. I still have a lot of unanswered questions.
BILD: Many people are complaining about rising gas and oil prices. Why is it still important that we boycott Russia's oil and gas?
Zelensky: You know what? There are some values that are very difficult to explain until a war occurs in your country. Then you no longer think about reforms. You can't afford to buy anything or regulations. You don't even think about rising gas and electricity. You don't want to save yourself from going on vacation anymore. You no longer think about the fact that taxes grow every year. All of this stays in the background when the war starts and nothing else is of priority. That is not the real value of life. The real value is for you to live and not to be killed. And that's what Europe has to do: protect life and set values first. I hope the priorities in your life remain true values. What's happening to us can also happen to you. And this is very important to me: we would also die for you!
BILD: What would be your response to the request to accept Donbas's independence and that the Crimea belongs to Russia? Are you willing to surrender in the name of peace?
Zelensky: The question here is not what I can give you. In any negotiations, my goal is to end the war with Russia. And I'm taking concrete steps for that. Compromises can be made, but they should not be treason against my country. The other side should be willing to compromise -- so they're called compromises. That's the only way we get out of this situation. We still can't talk about details. We haven't had direct conversations between presidents yet. Only after direct talks between presidents can war be completed.
BILD: How do you answer your children when they say to you: Dad, should we leave Ukraine?
ZelenskyKids tell me I have to stay here. But they should not miss the wonderful period of their childhood by trying to persuade their father to leave their homeland.
